What To Say When You Don't Get Hired

From time to time I will spend a lot of time working with a prospect to get a sale. Later, when I check back, the prospect will say "Oh, we went with so-and-so rather than with you."

The prospect may give a reason like the other person was more qualified, or their price is lower, or the prospect worked with them before.

Resist the temptation to tell the prospect they made a bad decision (even if they did).

Don't criticize your competitor. It may make you feel better, but it often leaves the prospect feeling you are angry at them. That closes the prospect off to any future deals with you.

Realize that you may have lost the battle but you haven't lost the war. Say, "I'm glad you found someone who can help you." Impress the prospect with your professionalism and concern for their success. A few weeks from now the prospect may be calling you.

Also ask, "Do you have other projects that I could help you with?" The prospect may think of a different job or one that is coming up soon that you will be right for.
