Firebird Support Ends

We have long since supported the Firebird database on our server.  However, support issues and the lack of integration into cPanel along with the small segment of our business that relies on this software, has led us to the decision to cancel support for the Firebird database.

Customers currently using Firebird will be given until the end of April, 2008 to find another hosting provider.  If there are extenuating circumstances that require additional time, we will work with each customer on a case-by-case basis.

Email File Format Upgraded

In our continuing effort to provide a solid and efficient web hosting platform, we upgraded the underlying email file format last night.  We were using the old format called, mbox, which stores all messages for each account in one file.  The new format, maildir, stores each message in a separate file.

There are three reasons we did this:

1.Obsolescence avoidance. The mbox format will no longer be supported at some point in the future.  maildir is newer and we want to keep up with technology as better methodologies emerge.

2. Performance.  The new format is faster because it doesn't have to parse out individual emails from one large file.

3. Stability.  Another benefit of having emails in separate files is that if one email gets corrupted, it doesn't affect the rest of the messages. There are also no locking issues.

These problems can be espeically important when email folders grow large. These issues will be a thing of the past with the use of the new format, maildir.

What does this mean to you?

If you have been using our web-based email, there were three choices: NeoMail, Horde, and SquirrelMail.  NeoMail used only the mbox format and thus is no longer available. If you use Squirrelmail, you may find your created folders missing from the folder list. They are not lost or deleted, but you will need to subscribe to them again with the following procedure: After logging in to Squirrelmail, on the right frame, on the top, click on the "Folders" link. You should now see a box with folders on the right bottom with a subscribe button. This should be the list of folders that you have. Subscribe to the folders you need via this interface. You only need to do this once. The next time you login again, the folders should already be automatically loaded.

If you downloaded your email to a POP3-based client program (such as is possible with Outlook or Outlook Express) and you left copies of your messages on the server, those emails will be re-downloaded as new messages.  You will need to remove the duplicates manually.

If you use a client program (such as Outlook or Outlook Express) to access your email via IMAP subscriptions, you will need to re-subscribe to your folders.

Some mail clients or systems using the deprecated LAST command will no longer be able to access the system. An example is Yahoo Mail Plus. Users may get errors saying that "POP server does not support LAST command". The issue is caused by the use of depreciated LAST command when the option 'Retrieve new messages only' is used. Please deselect the option "retrieve new messages only" in mail account properties of Yahoo Mail Plus. That will fix this issue. Please check this link for more information about LAST command: http://www.remote.org/jochen/mail/info/pop3-last.html

If you have any question, please use our support system and we will try to answer any questions as quickly as possible.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, but felt it was necessary to improve the hosting environment for our customers.

New Account Management for Web Hosting Accounts

We have installed a new account management and invoicing system, WHMCompleteSolution to provide an easier interface to manage support and to automate billing for Sohlius web-hosting accounts.  To get to this new system, go to the main web site, sohlius.com, and click on My Account in the left-hand column.  Or, to get to it directly, the address is https://www.sohlius.com/customer.  Your email address used to sign up for hosting is your account name (unless you've given us a different one since then).  If you have never logged in before, click "Request a Password" and a new one will be generated for you.

Once logged in, you can view many details about your account, pay invoices, upgrade your service, view support tickets, or change your contact information.  We encourage you to review this information periodically and keep it up to date to avoid disruption in service.

Please use the support system to ask us questions so we can track support, provide better service, and convert frequently asked questions into knowledgebase articles.

Finally, please let us know what you like and don't like.  We want you to have the best hosting experience possible and are constantly looking for ways to improve the service you receive.
